Our First Forest School Activity
I downloaded PlantSnap, which is a fabulous free app that identifies plants and trees.
Mrs
Chilvers and I (Mrs Stanborough), took the first 'Forest School
Planning' walk into our precious woodland. This was so we could make a note of the tree species and to see if we could identify the plants we found there. It wasn't long before we found
ourselves diving deep into thick undergrowth, staring down animal
burrows and uncovering mini habitats in decomposing tree stumps. We had wonderful ideas for literacy and maths within minutes. What an effect outdoor
learning has!
We identified Chestnut, Hazel, Laurel, Holly, Sycamore and noted a variety of mosses. These we couldn't identify at the time. We discussed a potential key area in the woodland that could be used for the Forest School children. We discussed the value of that area for the children's learning and also what impact we would have on the woodland and the animals inhabiting it.
For the Forest Schools Practitioner, we have two priorities;
- To recognize how a natural space may influence us
- How we may influence the natural space.
