Key Stage 2 Forest School Knot Tying

Forest School - Knot Tying

Children had the rather challenging task of learning to tie some knots for specific purposes in forest school this week. Due to the intricate nature of knot tying, the first half of our forest school session was indoors, which was rather fortunate given the wet weather! The children followed instructions to learn 4 different types of knot, depending on their year group; square lashing, shear lashing, hitch knot and adjustable hitch knot.

Once they had learned their knots, they took their skills into the forest. Tying knots to different thicknesses of material made a big difference to how the knot shape looked - this gave them an extra layer of challenge. They made suggestions about what was easier and harder, and how they could adapt their knot tying to different situations. I’m sure they will enjoy practising their knots at home and looking forward to putting them to use again in our next forest school session.
