KS2 Forest School - Knots and Tic Tac Toe

Forest School this week had children reviewing their knotting skills and learning some new knots.

All years reviewed clove hitch knots. Sycamore learned the square lashing knot to secure two pieces of wood, and Oak learned the Midshipman’s hitch - a knot used in the case of man-overboard and easier to tie under tension.

Then they went outside to create a natural version of tic-tac-toe using the square lashing knot to secure their designs together. They had to work in teams to collect the resources, separate some ropes into smaller threads to make it go further, and then secure their designs. At the end of the session they removed all of the man-made material, and then removed their traces from the forest floor, as leaving nature as we find it is one of the most important lessons in forest school.
