At our school, we are always looking for ways to inspire learning, connect with nature, and make thoughtful choices for our planet. Recently, we planned to build a brand-new structure for an outdoor classroom—but thanks to the creativity and passion of our Year 3 and 4 pupils, we took a very different, very exciting turn!
During a thought-provoking assembly led by Year 3 and 4, the children explored the topic of urbanisation—how cities grow, how natural habitats are affected, and what we can do to live more sustainably. They challenged all of us to think deeply about the impact we have on the environment, and how every choice—even building a classroom—can make a difference.
Inspired by their words and their commitment to protecting the planet, we decided to rethink our original plans. Instead of bricks and concrete, we began to dream about how we could create something magical and eco-friendly.
And that’s when the idea for The Little Hat was born! 🎪✨
Our new tipi-style outdoor classroom—lovingly nicknamed The Little Hat—is a peaceful, nature-inspired space for learning, storytelling, and reflection. It blends beautifully into our school grounds, requires minimal materials, and leaves hardly any trace on the environment. Most importantly, it represents what can happen when we listen to our young people and let their voices shape our decisions.
The Little Hat is already being used for reading groups, nature studies, circle time, and even the occasional singing session. The children love it—and so do we!
Thank you, Year 3 and 4, for reminding us that learning isn't just about facts—it's about values, vision, and the courage to make better choices. Here's to more outdoor adventures, creative thinking, and caring for the world around us. 🌍💚
