Exploring Our Local Area with Maps and Compasses!

Exploring Our Local Area with Maps and Compasses! 🧭

This week, our Key Stage 1 children have been learning all about maps, directions, and navigation — and what an exciting adventure it has been!

We began by exploring different types of maps in the classroom, spotting familiar symbols and learning how maps help us find our way around. The children were fascinated to see how their world could be represented on paper!

Next, we introduced compasses and learned about the four main directions — North, South, East, and West. The children had great fun practising how to hold a compass flat and turn their bodies to face each direction. We played direction games in the playground to help everyone remember which way was which — there were lots of giggles when we remembered funny ways to remember North, South, East and West!

Finally, we put our new skills into action by exploring our local area. Using maps and compasses, the children navigated along a planned route, spotting landmarks and following directions carefully. They worked brilliantly in teams, helping each other to stay on track and make decisions about which way to go next.

The children were so proud of themselves when they successfully found their way around — true young explorers in the making! 🌍

Learning to use maps and compasses helps to develop important skills such as spatial awareness, teamwork, observation, and problem-solving. We’re incredibly proud of how curious and confident the children have been throughout this topic.

Well done, explorers — we can’t wait for our next adventure!
