We are feeling inspired after our Week of Spiritual Emphasis ✨
This year, we chose “Oceans” as our theme π—not only because they are such an important part of our Geography learning and our work towards the Geography Association award, but also because oceans appear so frequently in the Bible. This week, we explored oceanography from a spiritual perspective, reflecting on oceans as part of God’s amazing creation. We discussed how they are entrusted to our care and why it’s so important to respect and protect them π
A huge thank you goes to our Pastor, who launched our week with a fantastic assembly—dressed as a ship’s captain, no less! ⚓
πΏ Learning Beyond the Classroom πΏ
In Science, we used iNaturalist to identify plants π± The children loved exploring outdoors, then drawing and carefully labelling the different parts of plants.
During Forest School, we linked our learning about the water cycle π§ to our ocean theme, thinking deeply about how vital oceans are for sustaining life. We also made the most of the windy weather by flying our class kite πͺ—a definite highlight!
In Art, we explored the work of Paul Klee π¨ and used tints to create bright, colourful fish, which will form part of a whole-school display.
π³ Forest School Reflections π³
Our Week of Spiritual Emphasis in Forest School was truly special. Sitting in the sunshine ☀️, taking time for prayer and quiet reflection, and listening to the sounds of the woodland helped us appreciate just how precious God’s creation is—and how important it is to care for it.
We also compared woodland and ocean ecosystems ππ², discovering how both have layers filled with plants and animals adapted to their environments. Acting as conservationists, we surveyed the forest floor and pond to explore biodiversity. While we noticed fewer visible species than in a coral reef, we wondered how much remains hidden and undiscovered π
To finish the week, we created imaginative sea creatures using natural materials π✨ From jellyfish and starfish to brand-new deep-sea species, the children’s creativity was incredible!
π Oak Class Highlights π
Oak Class had a fantastic week linking their learning to the story of the Miracle of the Fishes (Luke 5:1–11) π
They threw themselves into activities such as:
π¨ Making clay fish mobiles
✍️ Writing diary entries as fishermen
π» Creating digital mind maps to explore how we are connected to the oceans
In Maths, they tackled a brilliant problem-solving challenge—figuring out how many fish Simon Peter’s boat could carry without sinking ⚖️ After lots of discussion, they discovered it could hold around 500kg using at least four types of fish. Amazing teamwork and reasoning!
